MedCare: AMH’s In-House Hospital Information System (HIS)

As a not-for-profit organization committed to excellence and efficiency, AMH made the strategic decision in 2014 to develop its own Hospital Information System (HIS), named MedCare. This bold initiative culminated in a successful go-live on March 1, 2016, launching with core functionalities and steadily scaling up over time.

Today, MedCare stands as a comprehensive, state-of-the-art platform that connects multiple systems through HL7 interfaces and APIs, enabling seamless interoperability across our infrastructure. From modest beginnings, the system has evolved into a fully integrated solution that meets the complex and diverse needs of AMH’s operations.


A Pioneering Achievement in Bahrain

AMH is proud to be the first and largest private hospital in Bahrain to successfully implement and operate a fully in-house HIS. The system now supports five branches across Bahrain, all interconnected via SD-WAN technology, which provides a unified and scalable network for simplified management and maintenance.

The journey to build and maintain such a system was not without challenges—particularly in retaining experienced talent, fostering professional growth, and ensuring continuous delivery of high-quality software. Despite being managed by a small, dedicated team, MedCare has been running successfully for over ten years, with ongoing enhancements aligned to hospital needs.

Developing an HIS in-house involves significant investment—not just in development and support, but also in cultivating the specialized skill sets required for such a mission-critical system. Yet the benefits have been immense:

Patient-Centered Innovation

In July 2019, we expanded the MedCare ecosystem by launching a Mobile App and Patient Portal for patients. This convenient platform allows users to:

  • Book Appointments
  • View Lab and Radiology results
  • Access Prescriptions
  • Add dependents to your profile

Reports are instantly accessible after Lab Authorization—significantly reducing patient wait times and enhancing transparency.

We’ve also introduced a secure staff portal, empowering clinicians to:

  • Access EMR remotely
  • View Lab and Radiology results
  • Review PACS images
  • Enter progress notes
  • Place orders and prescribe medications from anywhere, anytime

This flexibility has greatly improved continuity of care and responsiveness.
